About the ASB

The Agricultural Service Board (ASB) is comprised of members of the County Council, two farm members, and the Agricultural Fieldmen. The ASB addresses the current and local issues affecting agricultural production, develops policies, and implements programs to benefit farmers and the environment.

The ASB was established in Starland County in 1945 under the Agricultural Service Board Act of Alberta. The Board is funded through a Provincial Service Board Grant, fees from Sales and Services from Control Programs, Municipal Tax, and other grants.

These funds are budgeted by the Agricultural Service Board members and are approved by the Council. Board activities are administered by the Agricultural Fieldmen and their staff.

The ASB and the appointed Agricultural Fieldmen ensure the following Acts are enforced within the County, as per the Agricultural Service Board Act:

  • Weed Control Act
  • Soil Conservation Act
  • Agricultural Pests Act
  • Animal Health Act

The Alberta Agricultural Service Board Act outlines the duties of the ASB, which are:

  • To act as an advisory body and to assist the council in matters of mutual concern.
  • To advise on and direct the weed and pest control programs, and soil and water conservation programs.
  • To assist in the control of animal disease under the Animal Health Act.
  • To promote, enhance, and protect viable and sustainable agriculture with a view to improving the economic viability of the agricultural producer.
  • To promote and develop agricultural policies to meet the needs of the municipality.
