Roadside Spraying and Brush Control
Agricultural Services control weed and brush growth with the use of selective herbicide applications each year. Our roadside spray truck is equipped with several nozzles and a boom, which allows our operator to selectively target weeds and brush growth. Smaller units are also used for spot-spraying applications. This spraying begins in May each year and ends in the fall.
The Agricultural Services department applies herbicide on brushed areas as part of the Starland County brushing program. After the brush has been physically removed, a herbicide application is performed to stop the regrowth of the undesirable plants. Herbicide applications may be performed using a roadside spray truck, UTV/ATV mounted sprayers, or handgun units depending on the location and timing.
If you would prefer to have no herbicide applied on the right of way adjacent to your property, you may contact the Agricultural Services department and request a No-Spray form. By completing this form, you agree to control the brush and noxious/prohibited noxious weeds along the right of way adjacent to your property. For more information contact the Agricultural Services department.
Roadside Mowing and Haying Permits
Each year, Starland County mows the right of way along each roadway within Starland County. Mowing roadside vegetation improves visibility, reduces snow drifting, and controls both weed and brush growth. Depending on the year and location, a shoulder cut or a full-width cut may be performed.
Starland County residents who wish to harvest hay from the municipal right of ways may complete a roadside hay form. If a form is not requested, roadside mowing may take place before the hay is harvested. To complete a form, please contact the Agricultural Services department.
Shoreline Weed Control
Each year Starland County partners with the province of Alberta to inspect and control noxious weed growth along the Red Deer River. Flowing water allows weed seeds to be transported downstream. Controlling these infestations early limits spread and the size of infestations that must be controlled.
Roadside Seeding
Seeding is performed on new construction projects within Starland County. Establishing vegetation early slows erosion, controls weed populations and protects new infrastructure. Methods of seeding include hydroseeding and planting with a disc drill.
